Mister Joshooa
With a deeply embedded music career spanning more than two decades, there are few artists who have had such a substantial and tangible impact on their city’s music industry as Detroit’s Mister Joshooa. While he was learning the ropes as a DJ, Mister Joshooa landed a job at TV Lounge, forming a partnership with club owner Ivory “Tree” Graves. During his tenure, he led TV Lounge through it’s infancy, playing an integral role in turning a small, local bar into the world-renowned electronic music destination that is is today. From ushering in the next generation of talent, to holding down his 15-year Thursday night Residency, TV Dinners, Mister Joshooa kept his finger firmly on the pulse of the motor city.
Now fresh off a 20-year run as the club’s Music Director and General Manager, Mister Joshooa is ready to flex his chops and show the world where his heart truly lies – behind a set of turntables. Like so many of the techno greats that came before him, his sound is difficult to classify, but deeply influenced by the sounds of midwest house and techno. One could say his DJ powers lie in the juxtaposition of finding darkness in light…or light in darkness. Regardless of genre, Joshooa’s musical expertise is palpable. His ear for sound and eye for production create a potent combination, cultivating multifaceted performances that allow listeners to turn off their brains and tune into their feelings. Feelings, remember those??
Over the course of his career Mister Joshooa has worked with a number of highly regarded local and international labels, with release credits that include 20/20 Vision, Planet E, Life and Death, Info Lines, and Cryovac. Inspired by his love for vinyl and deep respect for music and production, he launched his own label, My Baby, in 2016 with Eric Ricker of Ataxia.
With a tenacious spirit, Mister Joshooa’s success was earned through hard work and dedication to his craft. He honed his skills by asking the right questions and surrounding himself with those he could learn from, and he has poured his literal blood, sweat and tears into the music industry in Detroit and beyond. Joshooa’s steadfast dedication to the music, and earnest pursuit in molding the next generation of artists, has played an instrumental role in ensuring that the music he holds dear lives on with the integrity and dignity it deserves.
